Starlight Dance Competition: Rules & Regulations

The age of a dancer on the day of competition will determine what age category they will be in. Duo/Trio is determined by the oldest dancer. Group routines will be calculated by average age of the team.

Mini: 4-6 years

Junior: 7-9 years

Intermediate: 10-12 years

Teen: 13-15 years

Senior: 16-17 years

Adult: 18+

Please note: Any routines found to have more performers than stated on their registration form will be deducted points/disqualified. In the event, a dancer is unable to perform last minute, please notify the Starlight Management Team as soon as you are made aware. 

Solo - 1 Performer 

Duo/Trio - 2 or 3 Performers

Small Group - 4-9 Performers

Large Group - 10-20 Performers

Production - 20+ Performers

Starlight Dance Competition has the right to move any routine into a different genre category should we see necessary. Please register your routines in the correct genre to avoid this. 

Genres:

ACRO:

A ROUTINE THAT CONTAINS MOSTLY GYMNASTIC, CONTORTION AND BALANCING STUNTS BLENDED INTO CHOREOGRAPHY.

THERE MUST BE ELEMENTS OF DANCE IN BETWEEN TRICKS. NO FOOTWEAR IS PERMITTED IN THE ACRO SECTION TO ENSURE DANCERS ARE SAFELY EXECUTING THE ROUTINE

BALLET:

A ROUTINE THAT CONTAINS CLASSICAL BALLET STEPS AND TECHNIQUE. POINTE SHOES ARE PERMITTED FOR DANCERS OVER 12 YEARS OLD. 

LYRICAL:

A ROUTINE THAT CONTAINS BLENDED TECHNIQUES OF JAZZ&BALLET PERFORMED TO SLOW MUSIC TO TELL A STORY.

JAZZ:

A ROUTINE THAT CONTAINS JAZZ TECHNIQUE AND PRIORITISES PERSONALITY AND CLEAN MOVEMENTS.

MUSICAL THEATRE:

A ROUTINE WHICH INCLUDES ACTING THROUGH DANCE TO A SONG FROM A BROADWAY MUSICAL/DISNEY MOVIE. SINGING IS PERMITTED BUT NOT REQUIRED.

CONTEMPORARY:

A ROUTINE THAT PRIORITISES EMOTION OVER CLASSICAL TECHNIQUE. MUST HAVE FLUIDITY AND INCLUDE MODERN DANCE ELEMENTS.

COMMERCIAL:

A ROUTINE THAT COMBINES STYLES OF HIP-HOP, JAZZ AND STREET WITHOUT BEING LIMITED TO WHACKING, POPPING, LOCKING. MUST BE HIGH ENERGY AND AGEAPPROPRIATE.

TAP:

A ROUTINE THAT CONSISTS OF TAP STEPS, TECHNIQUE AND FOOTWEAR. NO PRE RECORDED TAPS IN TRACKS.

SONG AND DANCE:

A ROUTINE PERFORMED TO LIVE VOCALS, IN A CASE OF DUO/TRIO/GROUP ONE PERSON CAN SING WHILE THE OTHER DANCES. PLEASE NOTE MICROPHONES ARE LIMITED FOR LARGE GROUPS.

HIP-HOP:

A ROUTINE THAT INCLUDES HIP-HOP TECHNIQUE SUCH AS BREAKING, LOCKING, POPPING, ISOLATIONS, PRIORITISING RHYTHM.

TIME LIMITS:

Solo - 2 Minutes 

Duo/Trio - 2:30 Minutes

Small Group - 3 Minutes 

Large Group - 4 Minutes 

Production - 6 Minutes 

Time limits are strictly enforced to keep our schedule running smooth and ensure we have allocated enough time for each session. Please familiarise yourself with the time limits to ensure your dancers music does not get cut short. All music must be either uploaded with registration form or emailed to us at starlightdancecompetitions@gmail.com no later than 21 days before competition. Explicit/Inappropriate music may result in a routine being disqualified.

We offer both independent and dance school/studio entries. Please note a dancer may not enter as an independent entry if their dance school is present at competition. If you wish to register as an independent entry, please specify this on your routine registration form. 

No dangerous props are permitted at Starlight Dance Competition. This includes sharp objects, flames or any liquids, gels, confetti or glitter which will affect the stage surface for the next performer. If your routine includes a large prop/set please submit this in the additional notes section of your routine entry.

All routines are scored out of 300 points. This allocates 100 points to each judge which are broken into 4 categories.

25 points for Choreography

25 points for Technique

25 points for Musicality 

25 points for Performance 

Score sheets, Judges Critiques and Feedback will be transferred to all dance schools no later than 14 days after competition.

The competition schedule will be released after registration closes and all payments are recieved. We will try to be as accommodating as possible with our schedule, so we ask that any requests are made as early as possible upon registration. When the schedule is released to competitors, please review it carefully to make sure your dancers have adequate time for any costume changes, prop management etc. You can contact us at starlightdancecompetitions@gmail.com if there is any error with the schedule. 

A deposit is required upon registration to secure your routines. Payments are recieved through bank transfer. All details are on our routine registration link, alternatively contact us on starlightdancecompetitions@gmail.com for any payment concerns. 

Failure to pay deposit may result in your routines not being included in our schedule. Please note, at present, all of our competitions are 1 day events, leaving space for only those who have registered their routines fully, which includes deposit. 

Full payment is due 5 weeks (35 days) before competition. Any payments made after this date, will be charged an additional late fee per routine. 

Starlight Dance Competitions may use photographs and videos taken at the competitions for promotional use. Teachers/Parents and Guardians are permitted to film their dancers routines. 

Please note, only one teacher/chaperone per dance school is permitted backstage. This is to ensure the backstage area has enough space for all other performers. 

In the event of a technical difficulty during a dancers performance. They will have the opportunity to repeat their routine. We ask that dance teachers/chaperones have a copy of routine tracks on the day of competition as a backup option. 

Award ceremonies will take place at the end of each session. After this, a new age group/style session will begin allowing those who are finished competing for the day to make way for the next session's competitors. 

Title awards give special recognition to exceptional dancers. To be considered for a title award you must compete a solo performance. Title awards are agreed between all three judges and combine routine scores along with stand out performance qualities over the entire competition.
